June 11-17, 2017

2017 June Workshop VenueThe Tai Chi for Health Community once again is pleased to be a co-sponsor of Dr. Paul Lam's annual  U.S.A. week-long workshop.  This year the June Workshop is being held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.  Click for workshop information.

If you plan to attend, the TCHC Community would like to share several of the important and fun things happening during this week that may be of interest to you...

Airport Transportation

Virginia DowlingOnce again, Virginia Dowling is our Fair Lady Working the Shuttles! TCHC is helping to coordinate transportation for those planning to fly to the June Tai Chi Workshops in Asheville. Here is information from Virginia.
There are three airports recommended for flying into. They are listed here in order of size:
  • Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) – 25 miles from Blue Ridge Assembly (BRA) – about 40 min driving. There are only 4 airlines flying into this airport including one that shuttles from Charlotte. We will be working on coordinating transportation from this airport to BRA – see below.
  • Greenville Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) – about 90 miles from BRA There are 5 airlines that fly in here. If you fly in here, it is recommended you plan to rent a car and drive to BRA – about 2 hrs.
I will be willing to take names and flight schedules of those flying in to this airport and help you contact with others, if any, who have similar schedule.
  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) - There are quite a few airlines flying into this airport including an American Airline shuttle to Asheville and non-stop flights to Europe. Again – if you flying in here we recommend you plan to rent a car and drive to BRA – about 2 hrs. As with GSP, if you send me your flight information I will be willing to help you contact with others, if any, who have similar schedules.
Ground Shuttle from Asheville airport to Blue Ridge Assembly: We will be using Grandy Car Company which is familiar with shuttling people to BRA. The cost is $45 for one person or $25/per person for two or more for a one-way trip. I don’t know if this includes gratuities or if they take credit cards, but I will find out and let people know when they sign up. As in the past, I will collect the information for people’s travel plans, let you know if you will be grouped with others and then send the list to Grandy for arrivals. The information I need are your name, e-mail, dates of travel, airline, flight number and scheduled time for arrival and departure and a travel phone number.
I would like to have all the information by May 26 so I can organize the list and let people know the plans. If you are flying into one of the other airports and want to share the same information, I will let you know of others flying in or out the same dates and at similar time.
Send all information and questions to Virginia Dowling – ginnydowling@mchsi.com

Meet & Greet Kick-off!
Sunday Evening 7-9 pm

Join TCHC for dessert on Sunday, June 11th, 7 pm to 9 pm in the Washburn Room - the same room where our Morning Meetings will be held. Reacquaint with tai chi friends from previous workshops and make new tai chi friends from across the country and beyond.

We will be serving Hummingbird Cake and Strawberry Pie, local favorites, along with assorted fresh fruit and cheeses and tea. Something for everyone!

From 8 pm to 9 pm, our own North Carolinian daughter, King Goslin, will entertain us with music and songs of the area. Join in a sing-a-long or continue to socialize.

Meet the 2017 TCHC Scholarship recipients who are doing amazing things in their community to promote tai chi. Many of them would not be able to attend without TCHC Scholarship support, funded by your membership and the sale of raffle & 50/50 tickets. This year the TCHC community has done an outstanding job with their raffle donations. Raffle prizes will be available for viewing at the Meet & Greet and raffle & 50/50 tickets will be available for purchase. You may want to bring envelope labels so you don’t have to write your name on all your tickets. The drawing will be held at the Friday social.

Help Wanted -- Volunteers!

Please consider volunteering some spare time to help with various workshop activities. This is a great opportunity to network with tai chi friends you seldom see and to meet many new ones. Even if you volunteer only one or two hours during the pre-conference TCR weekend or weeklong workshop your help will be greatly appreciated.

More information will be posted soon!

Raffle to raise Scholarship Funds
(all week)

Each year we offer some great raffle prizes to help raise money for academic scholarships that are awarded to qualified members of the Community for the June Workshop. The drawing for these prizes will happen at the Friday evening social dinner and dance.
Betty Scanlon’s handmade quilt is always the centerpiece of our raffles!  Photo to come!
You will be able to buy tickets for the quilt drawing as well as any of our other prizes throughout the week by finding one of the many dedicated volunteers who help us with ticket sales.

Banquet & Raffle Drawing

Friday night it’s time to party and just enjoy spending time with each other. Once everyone finishes eating dinner, we will have drawings for raffle prizes so be sure to bring your tickets.  After that it will be time to “dance to the music” -- the way that only tai chi people love to dance.

More photos to come of some of the incredible donated pieces that will be raffled at the workshop.  Quilts by Betty Scanlon, and more!
